TREATMENT
Lumbar Discectomy
What Is Lumbar Discectomy?
Lumbar discectomy is a surgical procedure used to relieve leg pain, numbness, or weakness caused by a herniated disc in the lumbar spine.
If you suffer from leg pain, numbness, weakness, or loss of leg motion due to a herniated disc in your spine, your surgeon may recommend a procedure known as a lumbar discectomy. This procedure is successful in reducing pain and improving mobility for many patients.
A discectomy is designed to remove herniated disc material in the lumbar spine that is pressing on the spinal cord or nerve root. Dr. Subramanian is especially skilled in microdiscectomy, a technique that uses a microscope to view the affected area. This allows for a smaller incision and less disruption to surrounding tissue. In some cases, a laminectomy is performed to access the herniated disc.
During the procedure, patients are placed under general or IV anesthesia. Most patients stay overnight in the hospital for monitoring to ensure a safe and stable recovery.
Who is a Candidate?
Dr. Subramanian may consider patients for lumbar discectomy if they experience:
- Intense leg pain, numbness, or weakness
- Inability to perform regular daily activities
- Physical exam results showing weakness, loss of motion, or abnormal sensation
- Chronic leg symptoms lasting 4 weeks or longer after non-surgical treatment
- Presence of cauda equina syndrome
- New onset loss of bowel or bladder control
- New tingling in the buttocks, genitals, or legs
Discectomy Recovery
Patients typically remain in the hospital overnight following a lumbar discectomy. Once numbness subsides, Dr. Subramanian encourages patients to get out of bed and walk as soon as possible. Pain medication may be provided to manage discomfort during recovery. Patients can gradually resume normal activities and exercise as the surgical site heals.
